What Is A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped dental prostheses. They are designed to completely cover up your natural tooth to repair the tooth and restore your appearance. Crowns may be used to treat a variety of different issues, including:

Large Cavities

If you have a large, untreated cavity, a crown may be preferred over a filling. This is because a very large filling will tend to weaken your tooth and may fail prematurely. Instead, a crown is used to completely cover up and restore the affected tooth.

Oral Trauma

If trauma from a slip and fall, a hard hit in a contact sport, or another accident breaks or cracks your tooth, a crown is usually recommended. With the timely placement of a crown, you can eliminate your pain and discomfort and prevent further complications from oral trauma.

Infected Teeth

If your tooth is infected due to an oral injury or untreated tooth decay, it will need to be treated with root canal therapy to eliminate the infection.

The Crown Placement Process

After your initial consultation at #TheSmileDoc, it will usually take two appointments across about 2-3 weeks to restore your smile with a dental crown. At your first appointment, Dr. Reid will have to prepare your tooth for your crown.

He will clean and numb your mouth, then and then will use a dental drill to clean and trim the tooth into a properly-shaped, stable platform for your crown. Once this is done, he will take dental molds and photos of your teeth. These will be sent to a dental lab where your porcelain crown will be built.

Making your crown will take a few weeks, so you will be sent home with a temporary crown on your newly-trimmed tooth, and you’ll come back in about 2-3 weeks to have your permanent crown placed. At your second and final appointment, Dr. Reid will check the fit of the crown to make sure everything looks perfect. Then, your crown will be permanently attached to your tooth using powerful dental cement.

Caring For A Dental Crown

One of the best things about dental crowns is that they do not require any special care. You can treat your permanent crown the same way you’d treat a natural tooth. To ensure that your crown remains strong and healthy, you need to brush twice a day and floss once a day, maintain a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, and take other such steps to protect your oral health.

In addition, you should see Dr. Armando Reid at #TheSmileDoc for a consultation every six months. During your routine checkup, Dr. Reid will check your oral health and your dental crown to make sure that everything looks good, and that your crown is still in great condition.
